MNDSGN Brings The Breeze To Benny Sings' "The Beach House"

MNDSGN, a prolific, relatively new contributor in the Stones Throw guard of beatsman, has made quite the name for himself over the last few years with hallmark planet-jumping refixes, as well as his own 2014 label debut, Yawn Zen. Today, as a precursor to Stones Throw’s late-April Tokyo takeover, MNDSGN has graced us with yet another tinkered and toiled treatment, this time, with Benny Sings‘ already boogie-drenched STUDIO album cut, “The Beach House.”

Wielding a little of that Pasadena shine on the synth and sample work, the Stones Throw producer gifts us with yet another summer-calling remix to jumpstart the day, breezy and buoyant in all of the right ways. As mentioned, MNDSGN will join the ranks of some of Stones Throw’s finest as they extend the 20th anniversary celebrations to the land of the rising sun, spinning at Vision with Peanut Butter Wolf, Egyptian Lover, Knxwledge, not to mention Earl Sweatshirt, who just recently stepped out with his own sound selecting styles. So if you happen to find yourself on that side of the Pacific, please do partake. According to the label, MNDSGSN is also working on a new record, but this should certainly hold you over as we slip into these warmer days.

Mndsgn Shares Vibe-Worthy New Track + Readies Next LP

Smack dab in the middle of his most prolific year to date, Mndsgn appears to be on the heels of his next big Stones Throw release. We’ve heard his synthesized touches on tracks from Joyce Wrice, Nanna B., Tiffany Gouche and the gamut of this year’s most notable up-and-comers, but today he returns with his first solo offering since late-2014’s Surface Outtakes with the release of “Ya Own Way,” which is a hazy specimen of synth-laden funk and r&b, adorned with his own cool and comfortable croon.

According to the Stones Throw camp, we should be hearing a whole lot more in the weeks and months ahead as he readies the new album for release later this year. For now, you can hear his latest offering in the player below and slip into the work week with a heavy dose of the vibes. More to come from Mndsgn soon, though. So keep it locked for his next transmission.

Tour Dates:
Wed, 3rd Aug: Oslo. Breakfast with Ringgo, a Boiler Room thing some place, some where, with Ivan Ave & Mutual intentions
Thr, 4th Aug: Oslo @ BLÅ with Mutual Intentions
Fri, 5th Aug: London @ Jazz Cafe with Nanna B & Sofie

Mndsgn Announces New 'Body Wash' LP w/ Boogie-Blessed "Cosmic Perspective"

Can’t speak for the rest of you, but Mndsgn has remained in constant rotation since landing on the scene with his Stones Throw debut, Yawn Zen. The mostly instrumental 2014 release lived and breathed the intergalactic funk of eras past, dabbling in boogie and post-Dilla sonic experiments with equal proficiency. Today, he’s announced a new album, Body Wash, will arrive on September 16th. The announcement comes with the splendidly interstellar (and certainly psychedelic) new cut “Cosmic Perspective” and a more-than-fitting accompanying visual for you to rock with.

Dive Into Mndsgn's Latest Single "Use Ya Mnd (twentyfourseven)"

Back with his third single off his forthcoming Bodywash LP, Mndsgn has just released another taste of what’s to come. Today the nomadic music misfit shares “Use Ya Mnd (twentyfourseven),” laced with his hallmark synth swells and gentle effected croons; a bit of a departure from his mostly-instrumental Stones Throw debut Yawn Zen, which is certainly worth getting acquainted with. The track arrives as a quick follow-up to the boogie-blessed “Cosmic Perspective” and the lead-off single “Ya Own Way,” both of which are still in heavy rotation. But get ready to make room for another.

Mndsgn’s Bodywash arrives next Friday, September 16th via Stones Throw Records. Hear the new single down below and pre-order your copy on iTunes today. 2xLP vinyl pressings are due next month. You can also catch Mndsgn live and direct in Australia as he celebrates his label’s 20th anniversary with a grip of live shows, featuring Peanut Butter Wolf, Egyptian Lover and J Rocc

Common, Karriem Riggins, Dam-Funk + More To Perform At Free Stones Throw Festival In LA

Next month Stones Throw Records will toast to twenty years of being the supreme purveyor of progressive and experimental sounds the world over with a free all-ages festival in Los Angeles. The procession is part of Red Bull Sound Select‘s 30 Days In LA programming and it’s slated to be an all-star celebration by any system of metrics.

Virtually the entire roster will be accounted for with few exceptions (praying Knxwledge will turn up for at least a NxWorries victory lap after the album’s release on October 21st, though we wouldn’t rule it our just yet) including label founder Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam-Funk, J Rocc, Mndsgn, Homeboy Sandman, Mild High Club, Koreatown Oddity, Chrome Canyon, Sudan Archives and new signee, Gabriel Garzon-Montano. And as the day’s headliner, Common will perform, likely with Stones Throw heavyweight Karriem Riggins, who’s at the helm for his anxiously-awaited new album Black America Again, slated for release that very same week.

So if you happen to be anywhere else on the planet, it might be time to book that airfare. The festival will take place on November 5th in Highland Park, just a short drive from Stones Throw HQ.

You Can't "Play Pretend" w/ The Latest Gem From Joyce Wrice & MNDSGN

Over the last year, Joyce Wrice and MNDSGN have revealed themselves to be one of the west coast’s most potently proper pairings. “Do You Love Me” fuzzed and buzzed with lovelorn lilts. “Ain’t No Need” brought the brilliant DJ Harrison into the fold for a cosmic collaboration by any system to metrics.

Earlier this week the duo release a double-sided 7-inch single “Rocket Science” b/w “Play Pretend” via MNDSGN’s Stones Throw imprint, Akashik Records. And while they A-side began its rotations at the top of the week, today the boogie-blessed B-side surfaces for your weekend wind-down, ripe and ready for tonight’s post-work air-blessing rituals. You can hear it down below, just be sure to secure your copy of the vinyl via Stones Throw. Joining the mix is the mysterious sonic visionary, Kay Franklin, who offers a bit of enigmatic energy on “Play Pretend”.

For those just getting acquainted with Franklin, he’s spent his formative years watching Chaka KhanBilly GriffinMichael Jackson and others performing over his own original material. This multilayered songwriter, singer and instrumentalist has built his crew as an imaginative producer, even helping his uncle, LA Jay, cook up some goodness for the legendary Pharcyde.

You can also catch MNDSGN on the road thoughout the rest of the month with the Stone Throw crew as they bring the 20th anniversary celebrations up and down the west coast.

MNDSGN Tour Dates:
Nov 18 @ 1015 Folsom – San Francisco, CA
Nov 20 @ Holocene – Portland, OR
Nov 21 @ Barboza – Seattle, WA
Nov 22 @ Alexander – Vancouver, Canada
Dec 20 @ The Echo – Los Angeles, CA

Melt Away with MNDSGN's Live and Lush Performance of "Lather"

MNDSGN put us under his spell with the release of his sophomore Stones Throw outing, BODY WASH. Where his debut with the west coast label, Yawn Zen, proved to be a strictly-instrumental dive into his madcap music brain, BODY WASH found him expanding into a truly cosmic songwriting space, even flaunting his much slept-on vox; a silky and seductive treat that gets all kinds of burn on the new album.

Today MNDSGN gives us yet another taste of his live and direct styles in a stunning recording of “Lather,” supported by a full band in tow. And they do not disappoint, building out the sleek slow-burner into a rich r&b groove. Melt away with MNDSGN’s live and lush performance of “Lather” in the clip below. Body Wash is out now via Stones Throw. Grab your copy on iTunes today. Catch him in the flesh next week at The Echo on December 20th. Keep your eyes on us for more MNDSGN in the months ahead.

Staff Picks: Zo's 16 Best Albums of 2016

2016, you cruel, sadistic beast: you took frequently and relentlessly, swallowed legend after legend whole, no remorse. Yet some might argue (read: this guy) that you’ve plugged as many holes in our as our hearts have sustained. Which is to say, the love you took was almost equal to the love you made. Actually, never mind all that. 2016, with the exception of the notes that poured out of your wounds, you were absolute garbage. And we deserved better at the onset of a new regime that happens to be led by one of the most hateful orange men to have ever walked the planet. Luckily, our favorite artists gave us heaps to heal with.

And they did so with more nuance/less regard for conventional album formats than ever. Between Kanye’s concerted chaos, Frank’s mountain of mixed media and Beyonce’s audiovisual bomb, the album as we know it is simply no more. Stripped of its crown, and its limits. Three of the most commercially successful releases of the year were brought to us by independent artists, another sign that the landscape is shifting and revealing new paths for the modern musician, free of corporate strings. The church proved to me a reliable, self-replenishing source, and no one was shy about tapping in.

So, needless to say, 2016’s got us in a funk. And the sad reality of it is that 2017 probably won’t be the cap on it. But with the sheer breadth of quality releases the year’s seen, our  year-end superlative process is as complicated as ever (discussions that already demand the full tank of our emotional capacities) And seeing as how it’s best albums o’ clock across the internets, pulses are racing at the prospect of duking it out over who did what and which was better. But we’re not here for blood. So this year, as you’ve seen from my comrades Kevin Clark and Elijah Watson already, we’re introducing another first to our end-of-year programming. Namely, individual staff picks for best albums of the year.

None of these lists (including our forthcoming group list) are meant be taken as anything definitive. That’s a hard sell no matter the outlet. Rather, these are the albums that got us through the perpetual heartbreak of 2016. Only because if there was ever such thing as a truly transformative year, 2016 you were it. And for that we have to thank you, though we won’t miss you for a second. So on to 2017, a year poised to be somehow even more devastating than the last. A year where I stop telling you things you already know about records you’ve already heard. This list reflects precisely that promise. These are my favorite albums of the worst year in modern human history. They fortified me, helped me feel. Hope you’ll find that solace.

The Round-Up: Best Songs of The Week (feat. Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz, Show Me The Body and More)

Whereas most weeks in 2017 have been characterized by pop politics, this one finally gave us something other than Drumpf’s Digest to sit with (though we’re certainly not mad that the GOP’s healthcare appears to be DOA.) No, the last seven days were dominated by the Canadian culture vacuum that is Aubrey “Drake” Graham, son of Dennis, nephew of Family Stone bass gawd, Larry.

His 22-track “playlist” More Life arrived last Saturday, and much to this writer’s surprise (and reluctant enjoyment) Drake’s miles ahead of 2016’s titanic chart presence, VIEWS. But a bird’s eye on the week can’t got without mention of Kung Fu Kenny‘s colossal counter cut, “The Heart Part 4,” a shine-stealing, shade-dealing heat-seeker seemingly aimed directly at the north-of-the-border pop star and his hallmark existential sadness. Business as usual, across the board (though I’m really not one for feuding hip-hop egos.)

Either way, the week may have commenced and capped under the power of two perennials, but they certainly weren’t the only ones worth your time and attention. New albums from GoldLink, Mike Will Made It, Raekwon and Ol Burger Beats spanned hip-hop’s ever-growing spectrum, from face-scrunching boom bap to cerebral super-swung instrumental suites to the latest chapter in one of trap’s most prodigious legacies. Did we mention that the march towards Gorillaz‘s next outing official begun with not one, two or three, but four new cuts? Selections from each  — along with some residual rhythms from some of the best releases of the month — can all be found in this week’s edition of The Round-Up

A post shared by MNDSGN (@mndface) on

As he enters the final leg of a world tour, Stones Throw‘s Mndsgn has rekindled his connection with Joyce Wrice, treating the singer’s new single “Good Morning” to an intoxicating 90s r&b flip. Formerly a bump and grind anthem a la Jamma Dee, the Body Wash producer’s remix smooths out the cut with warm beds of synthesizers and a buzzing bubblegum bass line. Wrice’s vocals are butter through and through. The remix follows a one-off single with Kay Franklin late last year and fairly extensive collaborative work on each of their respective recent projects.

Hear Mndsgn’s glistening remix of Joyce Wrice’s “Good Morning” down below and pick up a copy of the remix EP on Bandcamp today, featuring edits from Benedek an Swarvy.

The Round-Up: Best Songs of The Week feat. Francis & The Lights, Nick Hakim, Syd and More

Another week enduring “greatness” in Trump’s America, another moment to recount the outpouring of new sounds here to heal, refocus and maybe even provide a needed distraction or 20.

In step with the summer tease, the week was brimming with bright records from buzzing and established talents. Francis Starlite cashed-in on years of behind-the-scenes string-pulling and assists with Chance The Rapper on an alternate version fit with the requisite footwork-friendly visual. Mndsgn and Joyce Wrice rekindled the spark on yet another 90s-gleaming remix. Syd returned to lay some smokey vocals over a house-treated heater from DEANGrizzly Bear and Beach House both delivered loosies for the more indie-oriented ears pointed at these pages. Stack those on top of some excellent new albums from Nick Hakim, Todd Rundgren, Lord RAJA and Buddy (entirely produced by Kaytranada,) and you’ve got quite the score for these early days of the new season.

Naturally, all these things and more have been compiled into this week’s episode of The Round-Up, which sees it’s most rooftop-ready installment to date. Hear the week’s best cuts below and subscribe to Okayplayer’s Spotify channel today for all of the earworms and oddities your heart can bear.

MNDSGN Lets Loose Some Mind-Altering Visuals For "TXT (MSGS)"

MNDSGN is Stones Throw‘s latest sonic recruit and he’s got one insanely tripped-out clip for his single “TXT (MSGS)” off the recently release debut Yawn Zen. Beat heads probably know the enigmatic sonic constructor for his prolific space-aged output, which is likely what caught ears out West. The on-point flip of Rah Band‘s “Messages From The Stars” mutates the sophisticated and funky cut into something a bit more jet-set and polished, taking messages from the stars and landing them in your ears and eyes.

The visual is a litany of wildly animated scenes, where the enigmatic producer simply sits still and watches the world run amuck with geometric figures and strobing, jolted lights around him. And yes, it gets intense.  The long awaited Stones Throw debut Yawn Zen is out now and can be copped via iTunes today. One listen should convince you that he’s precisely where he belongs, amongst the top-tier of future-funkateers and audible constructors, who have so intricately and diligently carved out their space. Go ahead get familiar with MNDSGN, we assure you there’s plenty more on the horizon. Watch the trippy clip for his latest single “TXT (MSGS)” below.

Stones Throw's New Recruit Mndsgn Channels "Messages From The Stars" In New Single "Txt"

Mndsgn lets loose a delicate glam-funk flip with “Txt,” the first drop off his upcoming Stones Throw debut Yawn Zen. With a calculated chop of The Rah Band‘s cult classic “Messages From The Stars” laid over some the West Coast camp’s latest addition both embraces the textures of his new crew and pays homage to the now 30 year-old two-step staple in one breezy mash. We’ve been hitting y’all with tidbits on the enigmatic LA producer for a minute, but if you haven’t caught on yet, dude is on some straight prolific ish right now.

Aside from working with some of OKP’s favorites (Iman Omari, Danny Brown, Sonnymoon and Black Spade to name just a few) his level of productivity amongst young left-field producers mirrors that of a Kaytranada or a Toro Y Moijust devoid of that shine. Needless to say, we’re more than antsy about this imminent Stones Throw release, as it cements him into the thralls of the progressive and eclectic crew’s roster. You can listen to the first offering from Mndsgn’s anxiously anticipated Yawn Zen LP below, but make sure to hit his Bandcamp and Soundcloud for some more sonics. Head over to Stones Throw for the full origin story.
